LESSON 3: POWERTRAIN

The D6 position is the normal position for most driving conditions. It provides:

•

Automatic shifts 1-6 and 6-1

•

Apply and release of the torque converter clutch

•

Maximum fuel economy during normal operation

•

Engine braking in sixth gear

The D4 position provides:

•

Automatic shifts 1-4 and 4-1

•

Apply and release of the torque converter clutch

•

Engine braking in fourth gear

The Manual 3 position provides:

•

Manual 3rd gear only

•

Engine braking in third gear

The Manual 2 position provides:

•

Manual 2nd gear only

•

Engine braking in second gear

The Manual 1 position provides:

•

First gear operation only

•

Engine braking for descending steep grades

External Controls

New floor shift mechanism.

– Lincoln Navigators are equipped with a new 6HP26 transmission. This six speed transmission required a

new style transmission gear selector. This gear selector allows for manual selection of first through fourth

gear, as well as automatic control of first through fourth (O/D disabled) and first through sixth (O/D

enabled). O/D is enabled by moving the gear selector handle to the left while in the D6/D4 gate, and is

disabled by moving it to the right.
